It was a new day at Santa Anita, and another stakes victory on the turf for jockey Garrett Gomez as he piloted Mizdirection to an easy victory in the grade 3 Monrovia over the downhill turf course. The 4 year old Mike Puype trained filly, who is a daughter of the great turf sire Mizzen Mast, covered the approximate 6 1/2 furlong distance in a blistering time of 1:11.3, beating local turf legend Unzip Me, amongst others. It would appear that Mr. Puype has found another filly star for his barn, and has the correct rider in Mr. Gomez to help them get to the finish line in front.
I look for more great things from these connections over the rest of this current meet and the coming year. Mr. Gomez seems to have a huge competitive fire burning right now, and the former 2 time Eclipse winning jockey may be ready to challenge for the riding title at this long Santa Anita meet. With the likes of Joel Rosario, and Rafael Bejarano giving him a stern challenge it won't be easy, but I've got a feeling that Mr. Gomez may be up to it this year.
