Dreaming Big On a Double Carryover Sunday

Happy Sunday afternoon. The big pick 6, double carryover pool that I thought was going to occur yesterday did not take place. The management at Santa Anita, with a huge gathering of people coming out yesterday for their annual Sunshine Millions day, combined the pick 6 pools for Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita in a nationwide advertising campaign for the new series on HBO about horse racing named "Luck." So that means there is a huge opportunity today, as the double carryover still sits at $239,000 and should rise to well over a million for today's pick 6.

Let me explain a little further. The pick 6 is the horse racing version of the lottery. In order to win, the bettors, or investors as I like to call them, must correctly select the winners of 6 races in a row. It sounds simple enough, but for the most part it is exceptionally challenging due to the massive combinations of possibilities. The way the ticket is constructed and then calculated is as follows. The number of horses selected in each race is multiplied one race to the next through the 6 races, then doubled because it is a $2 bet. Here is an example:

Race 4         3
Race 5         2
Race 6         1
Race 7         3
Race 8         4
Race 9         2
Total         $144      3 x 2 x 1 x 3 x 4 x 2 = 72 x the two dollar investment = $144

Ex : 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 =  64 x the two dollar investment = $128
Ex:  3 x 1 x 4 x 1 x 3 x 2 =  72 x the two dollar investment = $144
Ex:  1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 1 x 2 =  48 x the two dollar investment = $96

The last example, ( a $96 total investment,) is one that I have used many times, including one pick 6 investment I made a few years ago at Del Mar that returned just under $5000 when I hit the pick 6 twice with 1 ticket. This happened because a horse I had included in my pick 6 ticket  scratched before the race started. When this happens you automatically are awarded the favorite in the betting pool, which essentially gave me the pick 6 ticket twice when Star Redeemer won race 7.  You can imagine my elation at turning a $96 dollar investment into $5K. Something I have not mentioned yet is, that if you do not hit all 6 legs of the pick 6, you still get a consolation for hitting 5 out of 6. About 5 years ago, I invested $96 and collected $2100 for hitting 5 out of 6. When no one hits the pick 6, a large portion of the pool carry's over to the next day and is combined with the money invested that day, and so on.

That is our situation today as no one hit the pick 6 on either Thursday or Friday earlier this week, and that is why we are extremely interested today. Many people are interested across the country, as these pools can be life changers. When this much money is generated the payoffs are usually greater than they normally would be. In addition, when the favorites in any of the given races do not win, the payouts go up exponentially, making the return on investment go up even further. Today we are going to show you our selections for the pick 6 to give you an idea of what the IC selections can do. Let's see if today is our day! The following are races 4 through 9 at Santa Anita for 1-29-2012.

1,4,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 2,8,9,11 / 1,2,3,4,6 / 1,6,9 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =  $8640
1,4,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 2,8,9,11 / 2,3,4,6 / 1,6,9 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =     $6912
1,4,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 2,8,9 / 1,2,3,4,6 / 1,6,9 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =       $6480
1,4,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 2,8,9 / 1,2,3,4,6 / 1,6 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =          $4320
1,4,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 2,8,9 / 1,2,3,4,6 / 1,9 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =          $4320
1,4,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 2,8,9 / 2,3,4,6 / 6,9 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =             $3456

These are the types of investments that huge betting syndicates around the country are placing right now. In about 20 minutes we'll see if dreaming big on a Sunday pays off. In addition, here are a few more trimmed down versions of the pick 6 investments, for those on a slightly smaller budget.

1,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 2,8,9 / 2,3,4,6 / 6,9 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =               $2304
1,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 8,9 / 2,3,4,6 / 6,9 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =                  $1536
1,6 / 1,3,4,6 / 9 / 2,3,4,6 / 6,9 / 5,6,7,8,9,10 =                     $768

Good luck to all and may all of your investments be winning ones!

  1. Race 1 has been declared official. It was our top selection IC1 Via Verde romping away and winning easily as the 3-1 non-betting favorite, which will help the pick 6 payout. Stay tuned for more live updates as the fun continues!

  2. Well, race 2 is over and it was the 2nd longest shot on the board and paid $32 dollars to win. This horse had run 10 times previously and had never even run 2nd., but today he won like a champ. Stay tuned for updates from the 3rd leg of the pick 6.

  4. The 4th leg is official. The race was won by Zackn'mat who was IC2. So far the pick 6 sequence has gone IC1, long shot, IC2, IC2. 2 legs to go, and so far every ticket on the post is live to the consolation. More details to follow.

  5. The 5th leg was won by Unzip Me who was the heavy favorite and was IC1. This win machine has now won 7 of her 11 races at this distance down the hill at Santa Anita. It was a great ride by Rafael Bejarano, and of course the exacta was completed by his "turf compadre" Joel Rosario who rode the second place finisher. There is one leg to go. I'll be back after the last race for the recap.

  6. The pick 6 sequence is complete. The race was won rather fittingly by a horse named Russian Bayou, who went from last to first and ran "Bayou" and everybody else. The pick 6 payout was an astounding $30,017.20 for 6 out of 6! With the pool, the consolations, and the state take out this means that there were approximately 30 winning tickets world wide. The consolation paid $142.60. Every ticket we posted prior to the start of the pick 6 today would have cashed and received the consolation 4 times because we had 4 horses in the 5th race on every ticket. Congratulations to those who cashed!
